WE'VE all heard that the average person
uses only 10 percent of his or her brain -- but experts say
that's a scientific myth that's 100 percent false!
According to science writer Benjamin Radford, an editor at
Skeptical Inquirer magazine, this idea has been put forth by
psychics who say they've learned to harness unused parts of
the mind.
But new brain imaging techniques such as MRIs and PET scans
clearly show that many different regions of the brain are
simultaneously being called into play throughout the course of
a person's day -- not just one 10 percent chunk.
Here are other science myths that have been debunked.
WARM TAP WATER FREEZES FASTER THAN COLD TAP WATER.
What is true is that very hot water (195 degrees F) freezes
faster than hot water (140 degrees F). And the reason for that
is evaporation. Much of the very hot water is lost to steam,
leaving less water behind. Less water means the very hot water
will freeze faster.
THERE'S A DARK SIDE TO THE MOON.
Pink Floyd had a hit with "Dark Side of the Moon," but it's
simply not true. From our perspective on earth, we always see
the same side of the moon. But because the moon rotates, the
far side of the moon is at times lit up by the sun.
A PENNY DROPPED FROM THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING
WOULD KILL.
Scientists say that a penny could reach about 190 miles an
hour if dropped from the height of New York's Empire State
Building, which is 1,250 feet. But with air resistance and
wind it would probably be much less. You'd get a nasty bruise,
but it's not likely to be fatal. Besides, updrafts caused by
the wind would most likely blow a penny onto a setback roof
before it reached the street.
YOU MUST WAIT AN HOUR AFTER EATING BEFORE SWIMMING
OR YOU WILL DROWN.
I know your mom made you wait 60 minutes after eating a
Popsicle, but swimming shortly after you eat a snack doesn't
cause stomach cramps that can kill.
IF YOU ARE COMPLETELY COVERED IN PAINT, YOU WILL
DIE OF ASPHYXIATION.
This one got started because of the scene in the James Bond
movie "Goldfinger" where the beautiful woman dies after she is
painted all in gold. You won't suffocate if you paint your
entire body, simply because your skin doesn't "breathe." But
you could have a fatal heat stroke if the room is hot because
your ability to sweat would be impaired.
